Sibshops Volunteers Needed

My name is Audra Miller and I am a social worker at Bloomington Hospital Children's Therapy Clinic. We provide outpatient physical, occupational, and speech therapy to children with a wide range of diagnoses from developmental disabilities to mental health issues. One of my many roles at the clinic is to provide support to siblings of not only our patients but the community as well. This is provided through a program entitled Sibshops. It is a four hour high energy, recreational "celebration" about the good and not so good parts of having a sibling with special needs. We play games, eat, and provide the kids with an opportunity to meet other kids in similar circumstances. The kids range in age from 6-12. I received your email addresses from, Kristen Riehle, a BSW student that I had the opportunity to work with during her time at IU. I am looking for students who are interested in volunteering for this program, which is held six times per year. I do not have the dates confirmed for 2009 and am willing to work it around the schooled of student(s) who are interested. This would be an excellent opportunity for students who enjoy working with kids and would like experience co-facilitating a group in a laid back setting. The students would also have the chance to assist in the planning of the program. Please share this information with your students and have them contact me directly if they are interested.

Note for advisors and students:
There are no pre-requisites for LTAM Q-101, and freshmen are welcome; however, this option requires a deep interest in the peoples, language and culture of the Andes and adjacent lowlands of South America, and should be especially valuable for students who already have a knowledge of one of the other languages spoken in South America. Doctoral students can apply for the summer and year- long FLAS.

A Study on Lesbian, Bisexual & Queer Latinas

Calling all Lesbian, Bisexual and Queer Latinas !!! for a research study on their experiences. The study is specifically focused on how Latinas negotiate their sexuality when it comes to family, immigration and building healthy relationships in the United States. I started this project because I am committed to increasing the visibility of these women in the academy and to developing work that centers women's experiences in order to increase our visibility and level of importance. I am currently looking for Latinas interested in participating in this very important work. All I would need is approximately 1 -2 hours of your time on a day of your choice where we can sit down and talk in confidence about your experiences. The interviews can be done in person or over the phone and I am offering participants $20.00 in compensation for their time. If you or anyone you know is interested in participating please contact me at your convenience by email at katie.acosta@uconn.edu or by phone at 860-933-8082. This study has been approved by the institutional review board at the University of Connecticut.
