It’s Not Official Until Its Facebook Official: Breaking Up Over New Technologies

Date: Feb 13, 2008
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

If you are breaking up, what does it matter if the ending is announced on cream stationary, by text message, or in a face-to-face conversation? Breaking up is breaking up. Yet it matters –when someone says “she texted the break-up,” not much more needs to be said. Breaking up through the wrong medium can signal to others the initiator’s cowardice, lack of respect, callousness, indifference. People’s ideas about the medium shapes the ways that medium will deliver a message. In this presentation, we will discuss why, in a break-up, the medium is part of the message.
