Study Abroad in India

A Two‐Week Educational Study Abroad in the Land of the Banker of the Poor
December 27, 2008 to January 11, 2009

The SIUC School of Social Work and Case Western Reserve’s Mandel School is proud to announce a study abroad program to Bangladesh, focusing exclusively on the role of microfinance to alleviate poverty, and nurture social entrepreneurship.

The Nobel Prize committee awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize to Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank “for their efforts to create economic and social development from below.”
The trip will explore the basic ideas behind the Microfinance revolution in Bangladesh and its historical significance. We will also study it’s relation to health, finance, management, politics, social entrepreneurship, and social development.

Students will spend 8 days in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and 4 days in the villages visiting field projects, and meeting people.

Students of Business, Political Science, Economics, Public Administration, Public Health, Non‐Profit Management and Social Work will benefit from this trip. Students can take 3 to 6 credit hours for their participation SIUC School of Social Work director Prof. Mizan Miah, hails from Bangladesh and has worked with Prof. Yunus in the same university, thus the trip will be very personalized and unique in many ways.
