EXCITING NEWS FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN LATIN AMERICA

Indiana University is happy to announce the exciting opportunity to study Quechua, the language of the Incas, through the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) in the College of Arts and Sciences. Francisco Tandioy, indigenous community activist, will teach a section of beginning Inga for both undergraduate and graduate students. Undergraduates may enroll in LTAM Q-101, and graduate students in LTAM Q-501, for the Fall Semester of 2008.

Inga is spoken in Colombia and Ecuador; it is the northernmost dialect of the grand Quechua family of languages which has some 13 million speakers. This class features Inga language instruction as well as exposure to such cultural elements as community organization, traditional medicine, foodways, myths and legends, music and song, arts and crafts

Note for advisors and students:
There are no pre-requisites for LTAM Q-101, and freshmen are welcome; however, this option requires a deep interest in the peoples, language and culture of the Andes and adjacent lowlands of South America, and should be especially valuable for students who already have a knowledge of one of the other languages spoken in South America. Doctoral students can apply for the summer and year- long FLAS.

"Stress-less Final Exams"

This event features FREE activities to help students reduce their stress and anxiety for final exams. Activities include: FREE seated chair massages by IU Health Center massage therapists, FREE relaxation classes taught by CAPS Psychologists (classes will teach deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation skills), FREE relaxation CD's, and fun, stress reducing activities. Information will be available to students on stress management, study tips, test anxiety, and Wells Library academic resources. Students can also anonymously complete questionnaires to assess their anxiety symptoms, then receive feedback from a CAPS counselor about their symptoms and treatment resources. Study African languages during summer session 1 – May 6 to June 12, 2008

Intensive elementary Akan/Twi and Swahili will be offered during summer session 1. Students will be able to earn credits equivalent to 2 semesters:

For Akan/Twi, students need to register for both W101/W102 (Undergraduates)

For Swahili, students need to register for both S101/S102 (Sections 5227/5531 – Undergraduates)

Classes meet 5 days a week, 4 hours a day.

Students will be able to complete half of IU’s College of Arts and Sciences foreign language requirement during summer session 1 and they can continue with regular intermediate level courses during the following academic year.

Minority Law Day

April 5 ~10am- 5pm at the Indiana University School of Law—Bloomington

Description: This annual event introduces those interested in law school to the admissions process, the law school experience, and the legal profession. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with members in all elements of the law: law school admissions representatives, current students, alumni, directors of financial aid, law professors, LSAT preparation organizations, and even a few Deans of law schools! The full day of events is open to high school and college students, as well as any minorities with an interest in what law school has to offer them. Attending the mock class, browsing through the law school fair, meeting some law students, and shaking the hands of a few alumni will give the opportunity to really investigate a career path in the law. The objective of this day is to encourage interest in applying to law school and imparting valuable knowledge about the entire application process. Law School Prep Program

The University of Iowa College of Law will be hosting the 2008 Philip G. Hubbard Law School Preparation Program (PLUS), 2-27 June The program seeks to support diversity in the legal profession by inspiring students from groups historically under-represented in the law to become lawyers and by providing them with the skills and assistance that will strengthen their preparation for law school. Participants will receive a stipend, free room and a meal card; some assistance for travel expenses may also be available upon request. R100 Leadership Classes For Spring 2008

DID YOU KNOW....? IU students can earn an academic credit as they learn about leadership skills through active participation in programs and events through their student organizations and clubs
GET CREDIT FOR THE WORK YOU ARE ALREADY DOING!!!
The R100 Leadership courses are a practical way to learn and improve self-leadership and organizational leadership skills. These courses created by the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies, parallel the students extra-curricular activities with a college credit.
The classes are 1 credit hour independent study.

The classes are offered to active members of student/community organizations and clubs.
* There is NO actual class time but only two flexible leadership speaker presentations to attend. Time spent planning, participating, and attending programs and events sponsored by the organization are the class time for the students.
* The course assignments are practical and easy to follow. They help enhance what students are already doing with their organizations or clubs.
* Students receive an academic credit for extra-curricular activities and work.
* The class is free if the student is taking less than 17 credit hours and there is no late registration fee.

2008-2009 Applications

Unfortunately we still do not have the applications for the upcoming Fall Semester due to a delay at the printers. We hope to get them sometime before the end of the month but have not yet received an estimated date of arrival.

We understand that many of you would like to start working on the packet during the break. If you would like a copy mailed to your home address, send me an email, jelgerbe@indiana.edu, with your name and address. I’ll put them in the mail to you as soon as possible. If we get them closer to the start of the semester, I will send out another email asking you to stop by the office to pick up a copy.
