Transgender Panel

The 2008 Legislative session has ended, but we are trying to keep HB 1076 in everyone’s mind so it can be discussed throughout this next year. HB 1076 is the Bias Crimes Bill which would provide harsher sentences and punishments for those who attack and become violent towards a person or a group based on their race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation and gender identity.Indiana is one of seven states currently that does not have any hate crime legislation and we would like to change that.

On April 10, 2008,in the Maple Room at the Indiana Memorial Union from 7-8pm, come join us for a transgender panel in which transgender rights and the issue of hate crimes will be discussed. Please attend to expand your knowledge on this sensitive subject and further educate yourself about the challenges that this community faces.

We do encourage our participants to write a brief letter to their local representatives expressing their concern that Indiana does not have any hate crime legislation set into law. Materials will be provided at the forum. We encourage and appreciate your participation.

Thank you!

2008-2009 Applications

Unfortunately we still do not have the applications for the upcoming Fall Semester due to a delay at the printers. We hope to get them sometime before the end of the month but have not yet received an estimated date of arrival.

We understand that many of you would like to start working on the packet during the break. If you would like a copy mailed to your home address, send me an email, jelgerbe@indiana.edu, with your name and address. I’ll put them in the mail to you as soon as possible. If we get them closer to the start of the semester, I will send out another email asking you to stop by the office to pick up a copy.

You can find the link to last year’s application packet here: http://iupui.socialwork.iu.edu/snav/450/page.htm If you would like to get a head start on your references, we do not know of any specific changes to those pages. They should be safe to use again. Whenever the new application is uploaded to the site, I will notify everyone.

The deadline for applications is April 1st, 2008. All of the applications are reviewed at the same time so applying early will not get you accepted into the school any sooner.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly.

I apologize for the delay and thank you for your understanding,

Jen
